STIA Study Abroad and Honors
Study Abroad
STIA students are strongly encouraged to incorporate international experience into their academic journey. Studying abroad offers valuable opportunities to engage directly with the global dimensions of science, technology, policy, and international affairs.
Because STIA majors complete interdisciplinary coursework across science and international affairs, advance academic planning is important. Students should work closely with their STIA faculty adviser and the STIA Curricular Dean to identify programs and coursework that align with their academic goals and degree requirements.
Study abroad experiences can help students:

- Strengthen language and regional expertise
- Connect classroom learning with real-world challenges
School for International Training
STIA students are encouraged to pursue study abroad opportunities that complement their interests in science, technology, and international affairs. Many participate in programs through the School for International Training (SIT), gaining firsthand experience with global challenges through field-based learning and research. Throughout the process, students work closely with STIA faculty mentors and advisors to ensure their international experiences support their academic and professional goals.
Honors in the Major
The STIA Honors Program provides students with the opportunity to pursue advanced independent research on a topic at the intersection of science, technology, and international affairs.
Students selected for the program complete a two-semester honors seminar sequence culminating in a senior thesis and oral defense.
Honors Requirements
To graduate with Honors in STIA, students must:
- Earn a cumulative GPA of 3.50
- Earn a GPA in the major of 3.67 by graduation
- Successfully complete the Honors Seminar sequence (STIA 4998 & STIA 4999)
- Present and defend a senior thesis before a faculty committee during the spring semester
Selection for the Honors Program is based on proposals submitted during the spring semester of junior year.
Research & Funding Opportunities
Honors students are eligible for STIA-supported funding to assist with approved research and travel expenses related to their thesis work. Students are also encouraged to pursue supplemental university and external funding opportunities.
Completed theses may also be submitted to Georgetown University Library’s thesis repository.
