In the twenty-first century, energy and the environment sit at the center of the most pressing challenges facing the global community. Accelerating climate change, widespread land-use transformation, biodiversity loss, invasive species, and growing pressures on natural resources are reshaping ecosystems and human societies. These environmental challenges unfold in interconnected human and natural systems. At the same time energy production, transportation, and development choices continue to increase the fuels required for modern life, and reverberate across ecological, political, and economic dimensions.
The Energy and Environment concentration approaches these complex challenges through a socio-environmental lens, focusing on the science, technology, and policy required to understand the problems and to develop solutions. In this concentration, students may study societal reactions to a warming world, including advances in power systems and governance, while researching transitions toward more sustainable energy models. They may
This concentration also emphasizes how important empirical data and technical tools, such as GIS and data science, are used to measure environmental shifts and guide policy-making. With that, students become equipped to handle the political and technical complexities of resource management, science diplomacy, and climate collaboration at various levels.
