Global Health Research with the Brain and Mind Institute in Nairobi, Kenya
Professor Emily Mendenhall has been working with the Brain and Mind Institute at Aga Khan University since 2000, primarily through her partnership with Dr. Edna Bosire, a medical anthropologist and implementation scientist. Prof Mendenhall and Dr. Bosire have worked together more than a decade and co-mentored more than a dozen students together from Georgetown University, Aga Khan University, and the University of the Witwatersrand.
Prof Mendenhall’s and Dr. Bosire’s long time partnership has focused on projects in Kenya , Malawi , and South Africa , including the landmark study Soweto Syndemics published in Nature Human Behavior . They published the first ethnographic accounts of the politics of COVID-19, focusing on politics and vaccination in Eldoret. Their innovative writing on Long Covid politics and living with the illness were also the first of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa. Together with Prof Shabab Wahid , they have also conducted research and written about climate change and mental health, with a focus on the coastal region of Kilifi, Kenya.
