Space is increasingly shaping questions of international affairs, public policy, national security, economic development, and global governance. As commercial activity expands, new technologies emerge, and international actors play a growing role in the space domain, understanding the policy dimensions of space has become increasingly important.
The Science, Technology, and International Affairs (STIA) Program approaches these issues through an interdisciplinary framework that connects scientific and technical knowledge with policy analysis and international relations. Students and faculty engage with topics including space policy and governance, commercial space activities, international cooperation and competition, national security, sustainability in space, and the broader implications of emerging technologies.
STIA’s location in Washington, DC provides opportunities to connect with practitioners and organizations working across government, industry, nonprofit organizations, and academia. Through coursework, public events, guest speakers, and professional engagement opportunities, students can explore how developments in space intersect with broader political, economic, and strategic issues.
Academic opportunities include undergraduate coursework related to space and technology policy as well as Georgetown’s Graduate Certificate in Space Studies, which brings together students and professionals interested in the policy, scientific, and technical dimensions of space.
