Earlier this month the STIA Program at Georgetown University hosted nearly 300 guests for the annual Maloy Distinguished Lecture in Global Health, featuring a conversation between two of the most influential voices in modern public health—Dr. Tom Frieden and Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Dr. Frieden, former Director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and current President and CEO of Resove to Save Lives, joined Dr. Fauci, Distinguished University Professor at Georgetown and former Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), for an in-depth discussion on Dr. Friedens new book, “The Formula for Better Health: How to Save Millions of Lives—Including Your Own.”

Together, they reflected on the urgent challenges facing global health, from vaccine hesitancy and weakened health systems to the need for stronger preventative measures. Drawing on decades of experience combating infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, Ebola, and COVID-19, both speakers emphasized the critical importance of prevention, transparency, and public trust in protecting lives.

During a dynamic audience Q&A, students and community members engaged with the speakers on topics including restoring confidence in public health institutions, advancing medical research, and understanding the global implications of U.S. policy. Dr. Fauci and Dr. Frieden encouraged the next generation of health leaders to approach public health with hope, action, and a relentless focus on progress.

Following the lecture, STIA hosted an invitation-only dinner, where guests including faculty, students, and university leaders continued the conversation in a more intimate setting. The dinner offered a rare opportunity to explore pressing issues in global health leadership and cross-sector collaboration in depth.

The annual Maloy Distinguished Lecture in Global Health underscores STIA’s commitment to connecting science, policy, and ethics in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges.
